COTTAGE LAKE ELEMENTARY
Owner: Northshore School District
Architect: Bassetti Architects
Contractor: Triple D Construction
Cottage Lake Elementary is one of five pilot projects receiving a grant from the Washington State Board of Education for voluntary implementation of the Washington Sustainable Schools Protocol (WSSP), a program of environmental and energy efficient design, construction, and operation. Because sustainability was a new concept to most employees of the Northshore School District, Nancy and the Director of Capital Projects prepared a district-wide symposium entitled "How Do We Build a Sustainable Habitat for Learning" (brochure attached). The school was designed in two phases by Bassetti Architects. Phase 1 which included administration, music, and gym was completed in 1998. Phase 2, which included 16 classrooms, library, amphitheatre, raingardens and other site improvements, was completed in 2005.
Nancy’s participation during the second phase as the Director of Planning and Design for the Northshore School District included oversight of design and construction, with particular emphasis on the natural ventilation system (see section attached), raingarden-stormwater infiltration system, and daylight harvesting system. The Phase 2 project also received a conservancy grant from Puget Sound Energy and became a recipient of services and goods for participation in the King County Green Schools Program. Construction cost was $6.5 million.
