SPOKANE & INLAND EMPIRE RAILROAD CAR FACILITIES
The Spokane & Inland Empire Railroad Facilities project involves the restoration and adaptive re-use of a historic rail car facility on the banks of the Spokane River, near Downtown Spokane. CTA is the project architect and Stephen is the preservation architect and historic consultant on this project.
After working for two years with the owners in a prolonged negotiation to purchase this important property from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, Stephen Day Architecture was succesful in listing the property on the National Register of Historic Places and the State of Washington Heritage Register of Historic Places. We conducted extensive historical research on this property, paving the way for a historic tax credit-assisted building restoration. We also prepared an extensive National Parks Service "Part 2" application, working with the State and NPS on a wide range of preservation and design issues.
The McKinstry Company, a nationally-recognized engineering firm known for its work with high performance buildings, will be the majority owner and occupant of this complex - now repositioned as a state of the art demonstration project that underscores the connections between preservation and sustainability. The project completion is scheduled for Fall 2011.
